Carbon fiber, which can be abbreviated as CF, is actually a fiber material with a carbon content of 95% or more. In other words, the main element of carbon fiber is carbon. It consists of organic fibers such as flake graphite microcrystals, stacked in the axial direction of the fibers, which are carbonized and graphitized to obtain a microcrystalline graphite material.

Research shows that for every 10% reduction in body weight, fuel consumption is reduced by 6%-8%, emissions are reduced by 5-6%, 0-100km/h acceleration is improved by 8-10%, and braking distance is shortened by 2-7 meters. The light weight of the body can also improve the handling stability of the car.

 

The biggest advantage of carbon fiber is that the weight is less than 1/4 of steel, lighter than metal aluminum, is the perfect material to achieve "light weight". It is 30% lighter than aluminum and 50% lighter than steel. If all the steel parts of the car are replaced by carbon fiber composites, the weight of the car body can be reduced by 300 kg.

 

High strength

 

The strength of carbon fiber is 20 times that of iron, and it is the only material that does not lose its strength at 2000℃, and its excellent impact absorption capacity is 4-5 times that of ordinary metal materials. The same cross-sectional area of the material, carbon fiber can withstand the force than steel several times.

 

Carbon fiber can be used in half-shafts and drive shafts to achieve better transmission efficiency. In addition, carbon fiber, unlike metal, has fatigue and corrosion resistance, and the carbon fiber components of a vehicle have a longer life under normal use.

 

However, a major drawback of carbon fiber material is its poor plasticity, which is mainly because steel and other metal materials have ductility and can undergo large deformation without destruction, while carbon fiber composites do not have this characteristic. So it will shatter after a strong impact, can not be repaired only replaced, the cost is higher. This is why only supercars and F1 cars use carbon fiber body.

 

Overall, carbon fiber material performs much better than steel at the performance level, and under the same conditions carbon fiber body can bring a full range of safety, handling, fuel economy, durability and other improvements to the vehicle.

 

Why is carbon fiber so expensive?

The production of carbon fiber is a very complex system process, from the preparation of the original filament to the pre-oxidation carbonization graphitization, to the sizing and encapsulation of the finished product, each step of the production process has high requirements and requires high precision control, and the requirements of multiple equipment are very high. The large initial equipment investment and maintenance cost is one of the reasons for the higher price of carbon fiber.

 

Especially the late carbonization graphitization requires very high temperature and the high energy consumption of the production process is also another reason for the high cost of carbon fiber.

 

What other applications are carbon fiber used in?

 

Aerospace

 

It is hoped that aerospace engines can be made light enough, so how to minimize the density of the material as much as possible is a good way to do so.

 

Because of its low density, high strength and fatigue resistance, carbon fiber is used in a wide range of aerospace applications. For example, carbon fiber can be used to make fuel storage tanks for rockets, for example, to make the shells of aircraft, and so on. In particular, the proportion of carbon fiber used in the manufacture of advanced civil airliners has now exceeded 50%.

 

Sports and leisure

Construction applications

 

Carbon fiber is mainly used in the reinforcement of architectural bridges, the main structure of artistic buildings, construction machinery, bridges, seismic and earthquake resistant buildings and pipelines.
