What is carbon fiber?


Generally, the density of carbon fiber is 1750 kg / m3. Such a low density makes it widely used in large aircraft. For example, A350, A380 and Boeing 787 of Airbus use carbon fiber composites to reduce fuel consumption. In addition, the blades of large wind turbines, the bodies of racing cars and high-end bicycles are important factors for the increase in the demand for carbon fiber composites.


Structure of carbon fiber


Comparison of 6 micron diameter carbon fibers with human hair behind: each carbon fiber consists of thousands of smaller carbon fibers, about 5 to 8 microns in diameter. At the atomic level, carbon fibers are very similar to graphite and are composed of layers of hexagonal carbon atoms. The difference lies in the connection between layers. Carbon fiber is a new material with excellent mechanical properties. Its proportion is less than 1 / 4 of that of steel. The tensile strength of carbon fiber resin composites is generally more than 3500MPa, 7 ~ 9 times that of steel, and the tensile elastic modulus is 23000 ~ 43000mpa, which is also higher than that of steel. However, carbon fiber materials only show high strength along the fiber axis, but their impact resistance is poor and easy to damage. Therefore, when they are manufactured into structural components, they often use their advantages of light tensile resistance to avoid the part bearing side impact.


Advantages of carbon fiber materials


Carbon fiber is a kind of inorganic polymer fiber with carbon content higher than 90%. It not only has the inherent characteristics of carbon materials, but also has the flexibility of textile fibers. The preparation of carbon fiber is a complex process. From the precursor to the finished product, it needs many steps, such as pre oxidation, high-temperature carbonization, graphitization, surface treatment and so on. One of the characteristics of carbon fiber is light weight. The most intuitive change brought about by the application of this material in super running or racing is the reduction of the weight of the whole vehicle. On the premise that the power system remains unchanged, the weight reduced body will bring a better acceleration feeling. Compared with the weight reduction method of throwing away air conditioning, audio and other equipment, the application of carbon fiber material can achieve better results while retaining comfortable configuration, The application of carbon fiber composites can reduce the weight of automobile body and chassis by 40 ~ 60%, which is equivalent to 1 / 3 ~ 1 / 6 of the weight of steel structure.


There is no doubt that carbon fiber contributes to vehicle lightweight, but does lighter mass mean lower strength? The answer is no! The tensile strength of carbon fiber composites is generally more than 3500MPa, which is 7-9 times that of steel. Although the axial strength is only excellent, it is also enough to meet the demand for vehicle safety performance. The statement that "the thicker steel plate means the higher safety performance" itself is not correct. The factor determining the safety level of the vehicle body mainly depends on the structure and strength of the frame, so the application of carbon fiber materials has little to do with the safety performance of the whole vehicle.


In addition to the above advantages, carbon fiber composite also has excellent heat resistance (can withstand high temperature above 2000 ℃) and excellent thermal shock resistance, which makes it an ideal material for engine hood. In addition, its coefficient of thermal expansion is very low, so that the vehicle will not deform under high enthusiasm. Its excellent corrosion resistance and radiation performance are unmatched by ordinary steel materials.
