AE86 is a small, lightweight, and cost-effective car produced by Toyota Motor Company. It was launched into the production line in 1983 as the fourth generation Toyota Corolla. The TERCEL, launched by Toyota Motor Company in 1978, marked the beginning of the development of small cars from the FR (front engine rear wheel drive), which is simple in construction but expensive and occupies space, to the FF (front engine front wheel drive), which is more complex but lower in cost, due to advancements in automotive technology. Since then, STARLET, COROLLA and other car series have successively switched to the FF camp. Under the trend of the times, the fourth generation LEVIN/TRUNO in 1983 became the FR descendant of the COROLLA car series.

Toyota launched the first generation COROLLA in 1966, and in 1968, it launched the derivative SPRINTER in the form of a fastback. Until the modification in 1970, SPRINGER was still attached to COLLA, and the official name was also COLLA SPRINGER. However, after entering the second generation with COROLLA, SPRINTER added its own four door model in 1971, and has since developed as an independent car series. Although COROLLA and SPRINTER have separated in this way, they have never lost their characteristic of advancing and retreating together. For example, after the first facelift in 1979, the brothers simultaneously added a coupe model in March 1972. The version name of COROLLA is LEVIN, meaning "lightning"; SPRINTER has the meaning of "thunder" as TRUNO. Due to the fact that LEVIN and TRUNO are only one model within the vehicle series, their official names should be COROLLA LEVIN and SPRINTER TRUNO.

After the introduction of LEVIN/TRUNO, it grew along with COROLLA/SPRINTER, and the two transfers in April 1974 and March 1979 were no exception. However, after COROLLA/SPRINTER entered its fifth generation in May 1983, LEVIN/TRUNO had a major difference from its four and five door models. Under the condition that all other models used FF, the fourth generation LEVIN/TRUNO, which continued to use FR, not only became a outlier in the same family, It also appeared particularly unique in front of the FF army that flooded the market at that time.

The same car series has front and rear wheel drive, which is said to be due to Toyota's FF technology not being sufficient to handle high-performance engines at the time, making it difficult for the front wheels to balance steering and unleash powerful power. As a result, this generation of LEVIN/TRUNO had to follow the FR layout. However, those who insist on right or wrong will emphasize that the fourth generation LEVIN/TRUNO should be called the 80 series, which is divided into a 1.5-liter AE85 and a 1.6-liter AE86, the latter being the most sought after object, In Japan, there is a nickname called 'eight six', meaning 'eight six'.

This generation of LEVIN/TRUNO has at least one difference from previous generations: before that, what could be called LEVIN/TRUNO used the DOHC engine 4AGEU. However, Toyota broke this tradition and even the single camshaft AE85 could be polished. Whether it's 86 or 85, in addition to the three door model, the fourth generation LEVIN/TRUNO actually has a two door model "GT". The simpler way to distinguish between TRUNO and LEVIN is to install a tilt-up headlight, which is TRUNO, while a fixed square lamp is LEVIN.

In 1984, Toyota launched the AE86 in Japan, North America, and Australia
