Evolution 5 with improved performance standards

Makinen, who has achieved outstanding results in WRC by driving the new generation EVO IV, has won the driver championship for two consecutive years, greatly inspiring MITSUBISHI's ambition. Therefore, on January 26, 1998, one and a half years after the emergence of EVO IV, the fifth generation evolutionary version of EVO V was grandly introduced.

The excellent performance of the EVO IV on the field has made other opponents develop even more closely. In order to continue to maintain the results, MITSUBISHI has improved engine torque and widened the wheelbase. The overall handling stability of the EVO V has been upgraded, and the use of a large-sized Brembo brake system has further transformed the EVO IV into a more mature EVO V. The EVO IV engine, with a slight increase in torque, still maintains a maximum horsepower of 280 despite the expansion of the turbine exhaust port, lightweight pistons, and large-scale radiators and oil coolers. However, the peak torque has increased from 36kgm of the EVO IV to 38kgm. Therefore, the gearbox has also been comprehensively enhanced to meet the needs, which is very helpful for shortening the race schedule. In terms of suspension system, the extension of the front and rear arms, as well as the changes in the fixed points of the rear rocker arms, have led to an increase in wheelbase. The front adopts an inverted strut suspension design, and the tires have been changed to 225/45ZR17 specifications. The brake system uses Brembo brake system (RS option) with an enlarged size of 17 inch 4-piston calipers in the front and 16 inch 2-piston calipers in the rear, enhancing unparalleled braking force. In addition to the aluminum alloy engine hood and wide leaf panels, the aerodynamic kit has also undergone a new look, such as the use of a four section spoiler with horizontal wings at the rear. The limited release of 6000 EVO Vs can be considered a perfect and mature state, and the only certainty is that the pace of evolution will not stop there.

The increase in wheelbase is the biggest feature of EVO V, and the front chin also increases synchronously. The rear tail adopts a four segment design with a horizontal wing. The cockpit design is the same as the EVO IV, with a smaller gear shift and a red border added. The new style RECARO SP-JJ racing chair is made of unique knitted fabric. The 17 inch Brembo brake system and 17 inch large foot are both optional options for RS models.
