What is a carbon fiber engine hood?
Carbon fiber is a microcrystalline graphite material obtained by carbonization and graphitization treatment of organic fibers. The microstructure of carbon fiber is similar to artificial graphite, which is a disordered graphite structure.
Carbon fiber is a new material with excellent mechanical properties, with a specific gravity of less than 1/4 that of steel. Carbon fiber resin composite materials generally have a tensile strength of over 3500Mpa, which is 7-9 times that of steel. Their tensile elastic modulus is also higher than that of steel, ranging from 23000 to 43000Mpa. Therefore, the specific strength of CFRP, i.e. the ratio of material strength to density, can reach over 2000Mpa/(g/cm3), while the specific strength of A3 steel is only about 59Mpa/(g/cm3), and its specific modulus is also higher than that of steel.
1. Carbon fiber material, light and hard but expensive
The use of carbon fiber materials in car bodies is commonly seen in racing and supercars that do not require much consideration of cost.
The purpose of using carbon fiber materials in cars is to reduce weight and improve performance. Simply put, carbon fiber is lighter and harder than steel, so it is a weight loss artifact in automobiles. But its biggest problem is that it is expensive, so it cannot be popularized to ordinary civilian vehicles yet. Its application is more focused on racing cars, high-end luxury cars, supercars, and other models.
2. Falling in love with carbon fiber, the owner replaces the front cover of the car
Reducing body weight greatly helps to improve the dynamic performance of the vehicle, so many car owners have fallen in love with carbon fiber and are trying to use carbon fiber on the body. Currently, carbon fiber front covers are commonly seen.
Replacing the carbon fiber front cover has to some extent reduced the weight of the front of the car; At the same time, it also makes the car look more sporty (the appearance may vary from person to person). However, the disadvantage of carbon fiber front cover is its high price.
